Sitting places the hip in a flexed position, and some people notice stiffness when they first stand after remaining seated for a long period.

The response after activity is informative. Mild muscle fatigue that settles is different from progressive groin pain, limping, or a loss of motion that continues to worsen over days or weeks.

What To Track When Hip Pain Appears

Note whether symptoms are mainly in the groin, outer hip, buttock, or thigh, and whether they change with walking, stairs, sitting, lying on the side, or rotating the leg. Also pay attention to limping, reduced stride length, and difficulty with tasks such as socks, shoes, or getting in and out of a vehicle.

After a fall or other injury, inability to stand or bear weight is particularly important. In older adults, significant hip pain after a fall deserves prompt medical attention even when swelling is not dramatic.

Supporting Hip Mobility And Strength

Regular walking and strength work can help maintain hip function when they are appropriate for the individual. The gluteal muscles, thigh muscles, and trunk all contribute to control around the pelvis. Gradual resistance exercise can improve capacity, while gentle mobility work can help preserve comfortable range of motion.

Exercise selection should match symptoms. Deep hip flexion, twisting, or high-impact activity may be uncomfortable for some people, while others tolerate those movements well. A useful program is one that can be progressed without causing steadily increasing pain or loss of function.

When Hip Symptoms Should Be Evaluated

Persistent hip or groin pain, a new limp, progressive loss of motion, pain that regularly interrupts sleep, or symptoms that limit walking deserve assessment. Prompt evaluation is important after significant trauma, especially when weight bearing is difficult or impossible.

Because pain from the hip and lower back can overlap, professional evaluation can help determine which region is most likely contributing and whether imaging is useful.
